Dear Scoutmasters,
As the Mountain Man Area Director, I would like to welcome you, your Troop, and your First-Year Campers to the 2004 Mountain Man Program. Thank you for bringing your Scouts to the Silver Anniversary of Woodruff Scout Reservation.
I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of some of the major changes in this years Mountain Man Program, which is due to the increased demand for Woodruffs First-Year Camper Program. The first major change will be in offering First Aid Merit Badge to those Scouts who elect not to swim or already have Swimming Merit Badge. As with Swimming Merit Badge, the instructors for First Aid Merit Badge will be teaching in their respective program areasnot in the Mountain Man Area.
The Second major change is the discontinuation of the "Overnighter Experience." Replacing the Overnighter will be the "Five-Miler Experience." Mountain Men will be able complete the five-mile hike with map and compass requirement for the Second Class requirement #1b, along with working on plant and animal identification. This experience was extremely popular last year and we hope to expand the program this year. The exact details of the experience will be made available to you and your Mountain Men when arriving in site on Monday morning. Please note the Five Miler will be held after dinner on the same night that your scouts were signed up for the overnighter. The online schedules will be updated to reflect this change in the next week or so, freeing up the afternoon A and B periods for these Scouts.
Please advise the Mountain Men not to pack those items on the Equipment List for the Overnighter. Each Mountain Man will need to bring the following items with them for the Five-Miler: a hat or cap, good hiking boots or shoes, a water bottle, rain gear-if necessary, and a good Scout compass"Polaris" quality or slightly better. No circular or transit compasses will be allowed.
The Mountain Man Staff will be available for those Scouts who were unable to attend an instructional period due to illness or other schedule conflicts every Friday during the Afternoon A and B periods. Additional assistance to Scouts in need is always an opportunity never passed up by any Mountain Man Staff member; however, afternoon appointments are required in order to ensure the staff member and an assistant will be ready for those who want more instruction and practice.
The Mountain Men Program operates along the guidelines of the "Patrol Method." Each patrol will have a flag, cheer, a daily "Patrol Leader," and an assigned "Troop Guide." Each patrol will move from instructional area to instructional area on an hourly basis. Each instructional area will be exclusively devoted to a specific Scout skill areafor example, nature, knots, lashing, or wood tools. Therefore, it is imperative that each Mountain Man Patrol has at least one adult unit leader with them to assist in movement and monitoring youth behavior.
In closing, I would again like to thank you for allowing us to be a part of your Scouts camping experience and look forward to seeing you in camp this summer.
Sincerely,
Paul W. Gritz,
Mountain Man Director
